I think my fundamental problem when trying to engage with the opinions of quite specific lobbies is that I instinctively find people who complain about petrol costs or parking charges beneath contempt. As a starting point this makes for far more heat than light.
But I swear, here and now, that I will never complain about the cost of petrol. It’s cheaper than having to maintain my old pushbike, and an excellent deal for something that took millions of years of natural craftsmanship to produce. And I will never complain about the cost of parking either, nor will I go out of my way to avoid parking charges. The council is renting public land (in which I own a stake) to private individuals for their parking use up and down the county; if I think that money isn’t being spent properly, I’ll complain about that, not about the small fragment of it that I might occasionally have to pay.
