As a cautionary tale, rgl links to the Onion‘s “Day Job Officially Becomes Job“. I’d forgotten how much I liked this article. “Liked” doesn’t sufficiently cover the mixture of enjoyment, cringeing and self-recognition it provokes in me, of course, but on re-reading it I’m even more impressed.
With the Onion, the details are always important, and the article hits the spot most accurately in the single cartoon panel that they imagine that the onetime cartoonist-dishwasher, now dishwasher, has drawn. It’s a perfect example of the output of the talented but idea-free comic artist: a representation of his dishwashing, the only day-to-day experiences he has of note, with half the cartoon frame taken up with text and arrowed boxes pointing out painfully obvious aspects of the actual drawing.
But the finishing touch is a grammatical slip that the Onion‘s sub-editors would have never let through in the actual text, and is therefore almost certainly intentional: the cartoonist has used the non-existent “alot”. Genius.
